Production Update: Webisode 1

By now, you have all heard of the Mayan Apocalypse which is based on the end-date of a 5125-year-long cycle in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. Susan Milbrath, curator of Latin American Art and Archaeology at the Florida Museum of Natural History, stated that "We have no record or knowledge that [the Maya] would think the world would come to an end" in 2012."

"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Florida. A little known interpretation of this transition is that the date marks the start of time in which Earth and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, and that 21 December 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era.

What better way to engage in a spiritual transformation than by watching the first webisode of And Several Buthers' Aprons.

2006 will not be remembered as one of the best Christmases for the Hughes family. 29-year-old Londoner James Hughes was visiting his brother's flat in Bristol, for the holidays. James had been out drinking with his brother Andy earlier in the evening, but minutes after returning to the flat he ran to an open window and dived head first out of a first-floor window, falling about 20 feet to the ground. James died from severe head and chest injuries, taking the reason for his deadly leap with him to the grave.

Production Update: Back On Track

As you have no doubt seen, production on And Several Butchers' Aprons has started to slide - something we are truly sorry about. To misquote Douglas Adams: "I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be." In other words, the detour taken will be beneficial to the production in the long run. </CRYPTIC>

So from here the plan is simple: finish the first webisode. We have been editing it and will get it finished and online soon - and by soon we mean before the end of the Mayan calendar! The very least we can do is show you another sketch... so here it is:

Wayne Condo, a 45-year-old mime artist from Melbourne, died of a heart attack midway through a performance on July 13th, 1998. The 300 members of the audience initially thought that his collapsing to the floor and remaining motionless were part of the act.

Morbid Mortality Monthly - October


Hungarian painter, poet and sculptor Mihaly Gubis was killed when his one and a half ton sculpture fell on him. Gubis had been loading the 24ft high "Woman With Four Breasts" sculpture onto the back of a lorry in Mundelsheim, Germany, on 17 May 2006. At one point during the attempt to transport the sculpture to an exhibition, the huge piece of art lurched violently to one side, leading Mihaly to try and push it back with his body. However the 58-year-old artist only succeeded in throwing it further off balance, causing it to fall onto him. He was crushed and died instantly.

Morbid Mortality Monthly - September

Police in Yekaterinburg in central Russia were called out late one night in 1998 to deal with the problem of a persistently barking dog. Deciding the best way to solve the problem was with guns, officers at the scene let loose nearly a dozen shots in the dark. However, they only managed to shoot the rope keeping the canine in his yard. With the dog free, the police gave chase, firing off more shots - one of which hit the dog's elderly female owner in the heart.

Derek Kieper from Nebraska led a campaign against seatbelt laws as an infringement of civil liberties. He died in 2005 when a car carrying him and two other passengers crashed - the seatbelt-wearing passengers survived, non-seatbelt wearer Kieper died.

Morbid Mortality Monthly - July

Health professionals are always banging on about how essential it is for good health to drink plenty of water. Unfortunately it was a message that 35-year-old Shaun McNamara from York took to heart a little too seriously. In April 2007, his body was discovered in the bathroom of his home.

The cause of death initially puzzled coroners until they discovered that McNamara had been consuming huge amounts of water on a daily basis. The intake of up to 20 litres of bottled water a day had caused McNamara to develop hyponatremia - also known as water intoxication or water poisoning. The rare condition is usually seen in marathon runners who drink too much water during a race. It leads to a fatal disturbance in brain function when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed beyond safe limits by massive water intake - which is exactly what happened to McNamara. As one coroner said at the time: "He drank himself to death, just not with alcohol."

His reward for bringing humour to the editing session: to slap himself so we could get the perfect slap sound effect.

Production Update

Editing is well and truly underway and we will have another sneak peek online soon. Also, we filmed a couple of pick ups this week that were needed to finish the opening credit sequence - we had a fantastic time filming them and think you will enjoy them almost as much!

Kevin Mackle was a 19-year-old student at Bishop's University in Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada. In 1998, a drunken Mackle attempted to get a free Coke from a vending machine on campus. With one arm buried deep in its workings, Mackle began to violently rock the dispenser back and forth. The 420-kilo machine tipped over, fatally crushing the already smashed student.

Unsurprisingly, the minor facts that Mackle was drunk and was engaged in attempted theft did not deter his family from launching a law suit against the university, Coca-Coila Bottling Ltd., and the companies that made and operated the vending machine.

When a family in Buenos Aries, Argentina, went away for a weekend they left their pet poodle, Cachi, alone in their 13th floor apartment. Cachi managed to get out onto the balcony and fell, landing on 75-year-old Martha Espina - both died instantly. As a crowd gathered to study the carnage, pedestrian Edith Sola was forced to step out into the road and was fatally hit by a bus.

Afghan asyum seeker Saliamin Akrami, 32, escaped persecution by the Taliban in his homeland, only to kill himself by urinating on a live rail, sending 600 volts shooting into the tip of his penis. Saliamin, who was living in Willesden, West London, convulsed and collapsed onto the rail on the 23rd of October in 1999.

Victor Villenti was a strict vegetarian from South Africa who had managed to avoid eating meat for 32 of his 50 years on the planet. While walking through Cape Town in 1991, a frozen leg of lamb fell from a third-story window ledge, where it had been defrosting, and hit Villenti on the head, killing him instantly.

Meat Of The Week #56: Black Pudding. This cooked blood sausage is comprised largely of blood drawn from pigs, cattle or sheep. However, it doesn’t become blood pudding until the blood is allowed to coagulate, a filler of oatmeal, barley or sweet potato is added, and the entire mass is brought to a boil. During the cooking process, a delightful skin is produced atop the goo. While some like to remove the skin before plunging their spoon into the pudding, others enjoy its chewy texture and prefer to eat it last.

Meat Of The Week #55: Potted Meat. This inexpensive meat product is available at almost any North American grocery store. However, when it comes to grossness, this well-known product rivals anything you’ll find in a third world country. A check of the ingredients listed on the label is proof enough: mechanically separated chicken, beef tripe, partially defatted cooked beef fatty tissue, beef hearts, water, partially defatted cooked pork fatty tissue, salt, and less than 2 percent: mustard, natural flavorings, dried garlic, dextrose, sodium erythorbate, and sodium nitrite. Yummy!

When you are out in the post Christmas sales, be very careful. Granny Vera Longfield, 86, died after being run down in a supermarket by a toddler pushing a shopping trolley. Vera was shopping at a store in Lancashire, on the 4th of January 2006, when a youngster steered a trolley into a 6 foot high steel stock cage, ramming it into the pensioner and breaking her hip. She died in hospital two days later.
